EWB-MSU is a student organization that works to implement sustainable engineering designs in developing countries.
What is Engineers Without Borders?
Engineers Without Borders (EWB) is an international organization with a mission to empower communities to meet their basic human needs and to prepare the next generation of leaders to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Projects adopted by EWB seek to provide sustainable engineering solutions around the world to eliminate obstacles threatening communities’ abilities to have their most basic needs met.
EWB has its roots in a project with the goal of improving community access to clean water and sanitation infrastructure in San Pablo, Belize, by providing the technical skills needed in order for the community to harness their natural resources. Since then, EWB has expanded to a global organization made up of university and professional chapters currently working on 499 projects in 39 countries, reaching nearly 4 million potential beneficiaries.

Who are we?
We are the Michigan State University Chapter of Engineers Without Borders, a student-lead organization with a mission to improve the quality of life of those in our local, national, and international communities. To do this, we work to implement environmentally and socially sustainable engineering solutions around the world to ensure that every community is empowered to meet their basic human needs and achieve a higher standard of life.
EWB-MSU is a great way to meet new people, network with professionals, develop leadership and project management skills, volunteer, and utilize classroom knowledge in real-world applications.
Volunteering:
In addition to our local projects, participating in some of our several volunteer opportunities each year is a great way to get meaningfully involved with our Lansing community. In the past, we have volunteered at the Greater Lansing Food Bank and Ronald McDonald House. We have also hosted fun events at Michigan State’s Introduce a Girl to STEM Day and have helped Boy Scouts earn merit badges.
If you have any questions or would be interested in volunteering, please contact our Volunteer Chair, Maria Milan, at [email protected].
International Projects:
We currently have an international service project with the community of Mangalali, Tanzania where students are designing and implementing a new water system for a local community.
In the past, our chapter has also assisted the Detroit Professional Chapter with their composting latrine project in El Balsamar, El Salvador to provide engineering solutions to health & sanitation issues.
